IRASSHAIMASE! / いらっしゃいませ !

From the sprawling megalopolis of Tokyo with its bustling tiny back street bars  and flashing neon signs to the deafening noise of the pachinko parlours and illegible menus, Japan has an unfair reputation for being an intimidating destination for foreigners.

A land of contradictions and clichés.  An indecipherable language for most with the delicate layer of customs to navigate. It doesn’t take much to feel something or everything is perhaps lost in translation.  The familiar is somehow unfamiliar and vice versa. A forward thinking sensibility is underpinned by a deep respect for the past and tradition. A conservative, often repressed sense of self often ruptures in a display of mind boggling colour and inspiring creativity.

To be welcomed in and immersed in its magic is a joyous experience. One which has had a profound impact on my work. This show is a celebration of that impact and Japan's influence upon us all.

Irasshaimase translates as “Welcome to my shop or restaurant” With the show being kindly hosted by Folklore, it seemed like an appropriate title to welcome people to share our worlds...
